Nature and country in Pliny’s letters. From his Italian villae, Pliny addresses to his friends letters that allow us to perceive the amazing complexity of his attachment to nature. Living in the country, far from the negotia urbana, means, first of all, the opportunity of practising otium studiosum. Pliny also takes interest in the observation of those physical phenomena, mirabilia, which excite his intellectual curiosity. On the other hand, Pliny knows how to enjoy enthusiastically all the pleasures that nature can offer. His poetical emotion, his artistic taste are to be found in his descriptions of natural scenery. His keen sensitiveness is always acute whenever he peacefully walks in the gardens of his villae or hunts through the wild ...
