Research on the origin and the uses of ethnic names is essentially a multidisciplinary activity where historical linguistics holds the principal role. It is shown that the family of the terms, Siam, Chan, Ahom (and Assam), comes by truncation from kosambi> (ko)sam(bï), the name of prestige of the first Shan States, borrowed from the geography of India (Kausambï is the name of a town where the Buddha preached). In the earliest epigraphic occurrences, one also notes the use— at the same time— of a qualifier resulting from the Sanskrit word syama : "black, brown complexion (as a mark of beauty)."
