This article discusses the relations between Thebes and Sparta from the end of the Peloponnesian War (404) until the Battle of Leuctra in 371. Its principal thesis is that, after 396, the Spartan king Agesilaus exerted a dominant influence on Spartan foreign policy, and that Agesilaus nursed a personal grudge against Thebes which originated when the Theban magistrates ejected him from Aulis, where he had attempted to sacrifice as Greek tradition related that Agamemnon had done before him. Examination of a number of incidents in which Agesilaus and Thebes were involved during the years 396 to 371 suggests that Agesilaus pursued an unswerving policy of hostility to Thebes, the object of which was the subjection of Thebes.
