Menander was very famous through Antiquity, but this fact couldn’t prevent his work from disappearing, probably in the IXth century. This was not owed to any moral censure from Byzantine Church, as often thought, but to a cultural model change : as early as the second century A. D. the Atticist Phrynichos had violently attacked Menander about language. Photios had read Phrynichos and thought like him that classical Greek literature ended with Demosthenes, i. e. with the independent Athens.
