Suicide in the veterinary profession : study, management and prevention. The veterinary profession has a dismal track record, with a suicide rate three to four times higher than the general population in some countries, a rate higher than that measured in the majority of other occupational groups. In particular are mentioned overwork and arduous schedules imposed by the business that limit social development and generate the same anxiety and depressive disorders demonstrated in a large number of practitioners. The thus created social isolation is accentuated by a veterinary fraternity perceived as failing, even though it represents potential protective factor against suicide risk.
