Since the end of the 19th century, the selection of feline species has been based on esthetic traits. Amongst these characteristics, coat colours have received special attention, thereby providing information on phenotypes and modes of transmission of 28 alleles in 12 loci. Genetic maps for cats have recently become operational tools. It is now possible to clone feline pigmentation genes and identify the mutations responsible for the observed polymorphism. This molecular research uses the maps of syntenic groups retained in cats, man and mice, as well as very advanced knowledge on the large number of pigment mutations known in mice.
