Addressing the issue of animal welfare makes sense only if the existence of mental states is recognised in animals. Therefore, it is essential to try to understand mental states in farm animals, and more specifically their range of emotions. As animal emotions are not directly measurable, given the lack of verbal language, their assessment is generally based on behavioural and physiological modifications triggered by environmental stimuli. However, the interpretation of such modifications in terms of emotions is still open for debate.
