Productivity improvements expose dairy cows to such intense metabolic changes at the beginning of lactation, that any small problem may have extreme consequences. Too early or too intense fat mobilisation may lead to hepatic steatosis, with numerous consequences on the cow’s health, such as appetite loss, decreased neoglycogenesis, and reduced immunity. Likewise, hypocalcemia may cause not only muscle contraction disorders and eventually a downer cow syndrome, but also reduced immune response and digestive disorders. Finally, any change in the immune function during the peripartum period, a time when it is already at its lowest, may exacerbate infectious as well as metabolic events.
