Lung and upper airways carcinogenesis during in vivo cigarette smoking in animals A few animal species have been shown to develop cancers in the airways following exposure to cigarette smoke. Hamsters and rats can be used to validate the results obtained in short-term and in skin-painting assays when safer cigarettes are concerned. Larynx carcinomas and papillomas are observed in hamsters with a good dose-response relationship ; few lung tumors can be induced in rats at MTD but lung cancers can be easily promoted in rats pretreated by exposure to radon daughters. Cytogenetics of lung cancer suggests that promotion may be specific of the tumor type, lung cancer appears similar in many aspects in rats and man, therefore it is proposed that r...
