Antipancreatic immune reactions in 6 insulin-dependent diabetic (IDD) dogs were studied using murine pancreatic cells as target cells in vitro. Lymphocytes from these IDD dogs significantly altered insulin release from pancreatic cells, giving evidence for a cellular immunity. Insulin secretion was also altered, m the presence of complement (C'), by the sera from 4 out of the 6 IDD dogs, supporting the hypothesis of a humoral immunity. An increased release of. 51 chromium from pancreatic cells in the presence of IDD sera and C' suggested the existence of complement fixing antibodies cytotoxic against these cells.
