Les études visuelles des sciences : regards croisés sur les images scientifiques

Visual Studies of Science : Scientific Images Between Art History and the History of Science This paper analyzes some recent developments that have fostered new kinds of interactions between the history of science and the history of art. Specifically, it examines the emergence of the Visual Studies of Science in the English-speaking world, and its German counterpart, Bildwissenschaften, focusing on their disciplinary, institutional, and intellectual agendas. The development of the history of science can be traced to a shift away from the history of ideas and theories towards an interest in practices. At the same time, the history of science also sought to incorporate questions that pertained to cultural studies and to the history of representations. These intellectual developments prepared, and then shaped, the ways in which the history of science responded to the methods and subjects of art history, while art historians themselves began advancing methods for the study of scientific images. Although these different facets of Visual Studies of Science have been successfully institutionalized, they remain a heterogeneous collection of approaches and subjects that continue to lack coherent theoretical foundations.Cet article propose une analyse des développements récents qui ont favorisé des rapprochements entre l’histoire des sciences et l’histoire de l’art. On s’intéresse à l’émergence des visual studies of science dans le monde anglo-saxon et des Bildwissenschaften dans le monde germanique, en cherchant à cerner leurs enjeux conceptuels, disciplinaires et institutionnels. L’histoire des sciences trouve son origine dans une évolution plus ancienne, lorsqu’elle s’est progressivement distanciée de l’histoire des idées et des théories pour se tourner vers une histoire des pratiques. Parallèlement, des considérations issues de l’histoire culturelle et des représentations ont investi l’histoire des sciences. Ces évolutions ont préparé, puis influencé la manière dont les historiens des sciences ont abordé les méthodes et les objets de l’histoire de l’art, qui commençait à élaborer des méthodes pour étudier les images scientifiques. Mais si les études visuelles des sciences dans ces différentes incarnations se sont rapidement établies, elles constituent encore un ensemble hétérogène d’approches et d’objets aux fondements théoriques incertains.Bigg Charlotte.
