Historical reliefs during the reign of Augustus While establishing his monarchy, Augustus made use of monuments and figurative works on a massive and unprecedented scale. Political iconography was employed not only in the decoration of public buildings, but also within the private sphere. In most cases, such works are not imperial “propaganda” imposed from above, but rather initiatives of the Senate and people, as well as of social groups wishing to express their support of the emperor’s domination by displaying their approval. The iconographie themes focus of the core aspects of the emperor’s role : his victory over foreign foes and his veneration of the gods of the Roman state.
