“Museums ” and Collections in Ancient Rome Numerous archeological sources, and even more abundant literary sources attest to the ubiquitous presence of works of art, for the most part imported from Greece and in various spaces of Ancient Rome : private homes (domus), temples, gardens, baths, etc. In this essay, the author examines how the passion for art collecting was born amid the Roman elite. At first considered merely as war trophies brought back from foreign lands to serve the glory of the Roman generals, works of art remained in private collections, far from the public eye.
