Tableaux sur scène et sur toile, Paris 1850-1890

“Tableau” on Stage and “Tableau” on Canvas Between 1850 and 1890, two generations of artists - from Charles-Louis Muller and Léon Bénouville to Jean-Paul Laurens and Jean-Léon Gérôme - perpetuated the secular notion of history painting, drawing inspiration as much from Parisian dramatists as from Old Master works hanging in the Louvre. Theater, which had been revolutionized by the aesthetics of painting at the end of the eighteenth century, reached previously unattained levels of illusionism. By creating a competing visual form, theater forced the history painter to take position and either accept or reject it. The painter was faced with the following alternatives : either improve upon theatrical representation by creating images that were even more visually saturated (as Gustave Doré did, for instance), or else leave pomp to the stage manager and focus on redefining the specificity of the painted work as opposed to the “tableau” on stage and on reinvesting it with a sense of time specific to painting (narrative efficiency, alternative modes of narration outside the main action, etc.). This was Gérôme’s and Laurens’ solution to the recurring problem of theatricality. They successfully reinvented history painting and managed to put the “theater” back in “theatrical.”Entre 1850 et 1890, deux générations de peintres - de Charles-Louis Muller à Jean-Paul Laurens en passant par Léon Bénouville et Jean-Léon Gérôme - perpétuent la séculaire notion de peintre d'histoire en entretenant, un commerce aussi régulier, sinon plus, avec les dramaturges parisiens qu’avec les maîtres accrochés sur les cimaises du Louvre. Le théâtre, refondé via l’esthétique du tableau à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, atteint alors un degré d’illusionnisme inégalé et, forme concurrente de production visuelle, force le peintre d’histoire à se positionner vis-à-vis de lui : adhésion ou rejet. L’alternative offerte au peintre est alors la suivante : ou bien faire mieux que la représentation scénique en matière de saturation visuelle (ce seront les propositions de Gustave Doré, par exemple), ou bien le céder au régisseur de théâtre en matière de faste pour mieux redéfinir la spécificité du tableau peint, et réinvestir un temps proprement pictural (économie de la représentation, modes détournés de narration, au-delà du drame, etc.). Telle sera la solution choisie par Gérôme ou Laurens au problème récurrent de la « théâtralité ». Leur succès dans cette entreprise de réinvention du tableau d’histoire fut incontestable : ils parvinrent à renvoyer à ses origines l’épithète « théâtral », c’est-à-dire au théâtre.Serié Pierre.
