Eros, God of Love/ God Is Love. In Antiquity Eros (Love) was a God. In the modern age, the message of Christianity became that God himself is love. In this paper I take a close look at the representation of eroticism generally, and of erotic divinities in particular, in the context of the art of Antiquity. First, I examine why in ancient art the genre of heroic nudity was only illustrated by male bodies until the second half of the fourth century, and why women were not represented in the nude until relatively late. The obvious reason is that men‘s bodies were considered to have higher plastic qualities, while the female body seemed to appear to better advantage artistically when clothed in drapery.
