Éros, le dieu - Dieu est amour

Eros, God of Love/ God Is Love. In Antiquity Eros (Love) was a God. In the modern age, the message of Christianity became that God himself is love. In this paper I take a close look at the representation of eroticism generally, and of erotic divinities in particular, in the context of the art of Antiquity. First, I examine why in ancient art the genre of heroic nudity was only illustrated by male bodies until the second half of the fourth century, and why women were not represented in the nude until relatively late. The obvious reason is that men‘s bodies were considered to have higher plastic qualities, while the female body seemed to appear to better advantage artistically when clothed in drapery. Praxiteles, the great master of the representation of beauty in sculpture, played a key role in the portrayal of the nude female body. His work is the second topic of my paper. The Greek sculptor contributed significantly to the theme of eroticism in Antiquity with his masterful creations of the Aphrodite of Cnidus, the Eros of Thespiae, as well as with his Dionysus, and most particularly his three Satyrs, of which much more is known now thanks to recent discoveries. In the third part of my essay I present my recent research and discoveries on the general topic of eroticism in Antiquity.Le titre de l’article montre bien qu’Eros était un dieu dans la religion antique, tandis que dans la conception moderne de la religion c’est Dieu qui est amour. Trois points sont ici mis en valeur. En premier lieu on tente de répondre à la question de savoir pourquoi dans l’art antique ce que l’on appelle la nudité héroïque est réservé jusqu’à la seconde moitié du IVe siècle à la représentation des hommes, alors que les femmes n’ont été figurées dévêtues dans le grand art que relativement tard. La raison en était sans doute que la musculature du corps viril était perçue comme plastique, tandis que le corps féminin paraît être plus plastique voilé sous un vêtement. Praxitèle, le maître de la beauté, a eu un rôle déterminant dans la représentation en sculpture du corps féminin nu. C’est le sujet sur lequel porte le second point. Praxitèle a apporté une contribution particulièrement importante au thème de l’érotisme dans l’Antiquité avec les grandes créations de l’Aphrodite de Cnide, de l’Eros de Thespies, du Dionysos et surtout de ses trois Satyres, qui sont maintenant mieux connus grâce à des découvertes récentes. En troisième lieu l’article traite en général de l’érotisme dans l’Antiquité, avec une présentation des recherches et découvertes de l’auteur dans ce champ.Andreae Bernard, Queyrel François.
