La sexuation du Christ et la peinture française du XVIIe siècle

The Sexed Representations of Christ in French Painting of the 17h Century. Christ’s nudity has been an issue for artists ever since they started representing the Divine Being as an individual rather than through symbolism. At each of the three crucial stages of his earthly life (the Nativity, Baptism, and the Passion), Christ, in Saint Paul’s words, disrobed himself of one condition to take on another. Nudity, therefore, marked each spiritual transition in Christ’s earthly life. As such it is weighted with symbolic meaning, which explains its permanence as an iconographie theme. In The Sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art and in Modern Oblivion (1986), Leo Steinberg analyzed the overtly sexed representations of Christ in the art of the 15th and 16th centuries. This imagery included representadons of Christ’s genitalia in infancy (ostentatio genitalium) as well as in adulthood, sometimes going so far as to show his sex in erection. According to Steinberg, these images fell into oblivion following the reaction of the Council of Trent. Nevertheless, as I demonstrate in this paper, several examples of ostentatio genitalium or of perizonia bulging with the erect sex of Christ may be found in French works of the 17th century, for instance, in the production of Pourbus, Bellange, Poussin, and de la Fosse. The artists of the 17th century continued to use the rhetorical figures of the Renaissance, but in a way, which requires prolonged study and meditation for them to come to light. An example of this, I argue, is the open wound from which continuously stream the lustral water and the redemptory blood of Philippe de Champaigne’s Dead Christ. A contextualized approach is all the more important when dealing as here with a contentious issue.La nudité du Christ questionne les artistes depuis qu’ils représentent la personne divine en tant qu’individu et non plus symboliquement. Dans les trois moments essentiels de sa vie terrestre (la Nativité, le Baptême et la Passion), le Christ se dévêt d’une condition pour, selon saint Paul, en vêtir une nouvelle. La nudité identifie donc les passages spirituels de la vie terrestre du Christ, et s’impose ainsi comme une nécessité symbolique qui élucide sa pérennité iconographique. Dans La Sexualité du Christ dans l’art de la Renaissance et son refoulement moderne (1986), Léo Steinberg observait dans l’art des XVe et XVIe siècles divers procédés destinés tantôt à affirmer la sexuation de l'Enfant - l'ostentatio genitalium— tantôt à évoquer la présence du sexe du Christ adulte, éventuellement en érection. Selon lui, ces manifestations tombent dans l’oubli avec la censure tridentine. Pourtant, l'ostentatio genitalium ou le périzonium gonflé par le sexe en érection se retrouvent dans plusieurs œuvres françaises du XVIIe siècle (Pourbus, Bellange, Poussin, de la Fosse), comme le montre notre étude. Le Grand Siècle reprend les procédés rhétoriques de la Renaissance mais il ne livre ses indices qu’à la condition d’une méditation devant l’image. Ainsi la plaie ouverte d’où continuent à s’écouler l’eau lustrale et le sang rédempteur du Christ mort de Philippe de Champaigne. La question de la contextualité du regard paraît s’imposer avec d’autant plus d’acuité que l’objet - la sexuation du Christ - est problématique.Le Gall Thierry.
