The Sexed Representations of Christ in French Painting of the 17h Century. Christ’s nudity has been an issue for artists ever since they started representing the Divine Being as an individual rather than through symbolism. At each of the three crucial stages of his earthly life (the Nativity, Baptism, and the Passion), Christ, in Saint Paul’s words, disrobed himself of one condition to take on another. Nudity, therefore, marked each spiritual transition in Christ’s earthly life. As such it is weighted with symbolic meaning, which explains its permanence as an iconographie theme.
