Abstract

The Joseph Vernet’s Ports de France : Views for the King’s Pleasure. When he was charged of the mission of depicting the Ports de France, Vernet had not only to submit king of France an accurate representation of the harbours by him visited, but morover had to realize a succession of pleasant pictures. At first sight, the Ports de France would seem to be a faithful depiction, but looking closer, it appears Vernet had to, for aesthetic reasons or royal propaganda, take a few liberties with truth.
