Interactions entre Orient et Occident dans la fortification à l’époque des croisades

Interactions Between Orient and Occident in Fortification at the time of the Crusades. During the crusades, fortification constituted an exceptional filled of exchanges, implying many influence spheres, scattered in time and in space. In the 12th century, genesis of the crusader fortification resulted from the synthesis of several models, from antique fortification to european fortification, or contemporary oriental fortification, byzantine as well as muslim. In the 13th century, while import in the Holy Land of the capetian fortification developed in France constituted the essential phenomenon, influence of byzantine and antique fortifications on the crusader fortification kept up, and important exchanges with muslim fortification are attested. Moreover, during all the considered period, exchanges were not unilateral, and crusader fortification could often prove to be transmitting of innovative solutions and models, intended for a great success in Europe as in the Levant. Lastly, we must notice the global character of these exchanges, since all areas of the fortified construction have been concerned, from defense or form, to fonctionnai programs or symbolic dimension.Durant toute la durée des croisades, la fortification constitua un exceptionnel théâtre d’échanges, impliquant de multiples sphères d’influence, réparties dans l’espace comme dans le temps. Au XIIe siècle, la genèse de la fortification croisée résulta de la synthèse de plusieurs modèles, depuis la fortification antique jusqu’à la fortification européenne, en passant par la fortification orientale contemporaine, byzantine comme musulmane. Au XIIe siècle, si le phénomène essentiel fut l’importation en Terre sainte de la fortification capétienne développée en France, l’influence des fortifications byzantine et antique sur l’architecture croisée ne se démentit pas pour autant, des échanges importants avec la fortification musulmane étant également attestés. De plus, sur l’ensemble de la période considérée, les échanges furent loin d’être unilatéraux, et bien souvent la fortification croisée put se révéler à son tour émettrice de solutions et de modèles novateurs, voués à un grand succès en Europe comme en Orient. Enfin, il faut souligner le caractère global de ces échanges, puisque tous les domaines de la construction fortifiée furent concernés, depuis la dimension purement défensive jusqu’aux programmes fonctionnels, en passant par les dimensions formelle et symbolique.Hayot Denis.
