The article deals with the techniques of body decorations, direct or indirect, permanent or shortlived, used by the inhabitants of the South East of Nigeria : scarification, body paint, hair. — dress and hair — shaving and/or ornaments made from material. Performed for important ceremonies in the life of a person or a group, ornamentation leads to a real change in the physical appearance, so that the message carried by symbolical patterns can be transmitted to the rest of the community. The use of these signs, whose transmission is ensured mainly by women, is not limited to the decoration of the body of the individuals, since they show in the weaving of textiles, the painting of home walls, the masks, the sculptures and the engraving of wood or potteries.Léger Delphine.
