Statues to be placed on the Tiburio of the Milan Cathedral are mentionned in the text of the Annali and later were represented on the famous cross section published in 1521 by Cesare Cesarmi in his Vitruve translation. Their iconography had been changed since 1400. Instead of the Maiesta domini among the evangelists according to the original disposition on the woodcut of Cesarini the Virgin in a halo is represented. This changement seems to be symptomatic for the major iconographie frameworks of the sculpture cycles. The innovation to place the figures of angels above the portal gables can be attributed to Giovanni Pisano. He might have followed a design of Parisian origin on his Sienese facade.
