Though she was contemporary with Isabelle d'Angoulême, Marie de Montpellier, queen of Aragon, was not bestowed the same prestigious destiny ; on the contrary, she was obviously used as a means to achieve the matrimonial and patrimonial ambitions of her family. Her mother, Eudocie Comnène, was repudiated by her father Guilhem VII de Montpellier who endeavoured to disinherit her for the benefit of her stepbrother. Still very young, Marie was married to Barral de Marseille, then to Bernard IV de Comminges, by her father who eventually forced her to renounce her rights to his succession. Pierre II, king of Aragon, married her in 1204 and stirred up a rebellion which enabled him to gain immediate control and reign over the seigneury of Montpelli...
