Le château d’Angoulême et les donjons polygonaux dans les forteresses des Lusignans

Isabelle of Angoulême, John Lackland’s widow, married later Hughes X of Lusignan, count of the Marche, and had a « new castle » built on new grounds wich overlapped Angoulême’s roman precincts. In connection with that building, a charter dating back to 1228 and dealing with exchanged lands gives us very precious informations with regard to chronology as well as to topography. As a matter of fact, the castle is part of a whole complete project for new fortifications meant to extend the protected part of the city by one third. The fortress which most obviously looked as if it were built « menacing » the town rather than plannned to defend it, was mainly a women’s achievement : that is, as already mentionned, Isabelle who decided to have the walls built and then, Jeanne of Fougère, Hughes XII’s wife (1260-1282), who had the « Room » (la Salle) and the walls of the faubourg Saint-Martial built. Between the years 1270 and 1320, the donjon was erected with its polygonal shape so frequently characteristic of the Lusignan castles. In the first half of the 14th century, at a date remained unknown, a fourht level was added to the three ones buit originally. The will of continuity which is allpervading through the whole architectural body is absolutely remarkable.Isabelle d’Angoulême, veuve de Jean sans Terre, remariée à Hugues X de Lusignan, comte de la Marche, commence sur un emplacement nouveau, à cheval sur l’enceinte romaine d’Angoulême, un « château neuf » pour lequel une charte de 1228, relative à des échanges de terrains, est précieuse tant pour la chronologie que pour la topographie. En réalité, ce château fait partie d’un plan d’ensemble de fortifications nouvelles destinées à agrandir d’un tiers la partie protégée de la cité. Cette forteresse, plus visiblement bâtie « contre la ville » que pour la défendre, est dûe essentiellement à des femmes, Isabelle, déjà nommée, qui entreprend l’enceinte, et Jeanne de Fougère, épouse de Hugues XII (1260-1282), qui commence la « Salle » et l’enceinte du faubourg Saint-Martial. C’est entre 1270 environ et 1302 que voit le jour un donjon de plan polygonal, forme relativement fréquente dans les châteaux des Lusignans. Aux trois niveaux initiaux qu’il comporte, un quatrième sera ajouté dans la première moitié du XIVème s., à une date indéterminée.
