The most simple and probably most widespread motif of painted architectural decoration in the Middle Ages is the masonry pattern. There is no doubt this has been derived from Roman art but it is uncertain where and when the earliest medieval specimen can be proved. The archaeological facts of the stated monuments are either unknown or not sufficiently documented. Because of the frequent occurrence of masonry pattern in France, England and Germany its origin can be estimated north of the Alps, whereas Italy favoured the tradition of painting bricks or marble panels.
