Modulation of GABA-mediated inhibition in primary motor cortex (M1) is important for the induction of training-induced plasticity. The downregulation of inhibition during acquisition may promote cortical reorganization, whereas an upregulation once performance has plateaued may promote consolidation of the newly acquired skill.
