Objective: Angiotensin II is a potent vasoactive peptide that causes blood vessels to constrict, resulting in increased blood pressure. It acts through at least two types of receptors. The angiotensin II receptor type 1 gene (AGTR1) encodes the type 1 receptor (AT1). The AT1 receptor mediates the major cardiovascular effects of angiotensin II. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the 3'-untranslated region of the AGTR1 gene (A1166C) has been linked in several studies with essential hypertension.
