Généralement, l’histoire de la capoeira est construite sur des mythes et des légendes. Pour les dépasser, nous avons analysé son évolution durant le XXe siècle, à partir des archives de presse de la Bibliothèque Nationale du Brésil, croisées avec d’autres sources. Notre lieu d’étude fut Rio de Janeiro, épicentre culturel, politique et intellectuel du Brésil et capitale fédérale jusqu’en 1960.Avec ces changements de focales, la capoeira apparaît comme une tradition hybride et transnationale, constamment redéfinie au cours d’un XXe siècle, divisé en trois périodes.
