La capoeira and the black fighting arts : erased history, invisible techniques (1905-1984)

Généralement, l’histoire de la capoeira est construite sur des mythes et des légendes. Pour les dépasser, nous avons analysé son évolution durant le XXe siècle, à partir des archives de presse de la Bibliothèque Nationale du Brésil, croisées avec d’autres sources. Notre lieu d’étude fut Rio de Janeiro, épicentre culturel, politique et intellectuel du Brésil et capitale fédérale jusqu’en 1960.Avec ces changements de focales, la capoeira apparaît comme une tradition hybride et transnationale, constamment redéfinie au cours d’un XXe siècle, divisé en trois périodes. Premièrement, à Rio de Janeiro, la capoeira fut nationalisée par des pratiquants populaires, des pédagogues et des intellectuels (1905-1928). Deuxièmement, cette capoeira devenue brésilienne, sous-tendue par un idéal de progrès, se transforma en sport (1928-1953) dans le Sudeste et le Nordeste. Ici, en réaction, émergea une capoeira « traditionnelle », qui devint hégémonique à partir des années 1950, au point d’effacer de l’espace public, la capoeira sportive. Dans le même temps, les deux fusionnèrent, donnant naissance à la capoeira contemporaine. Troisièmement, à partir des années 1980, elle se métamorphosa en lutte postcoloniale au service de la défense culturelle et sociopolitique des Afrodescendants, population en souffrance dans le Brésil contemporainIn fine, les réinventions successives de la capoeira interrogent sur sa nature profonde. C’est pourquoi, nous en proposons une définition, basée sur l’étude de sa technique. La capoeira est un jeu complexe et kaléidoscopique, révélateur des spécificités technico-tactiques des arts de combat noirs ; classification nouvelle, dont nous montrons la pertinence.Generally, the history of capoeira is built on myths and legends. To go beyond them, we analyzed its evolution during the 20th century, from the press archives of the National Library of Brazil, crossed with other sources. Our place of study was Rio de Janeiro, the cultural, political and intellectual epicenter of Brazil and the federal capital until 1960.With these focal changes, capoeira appears as a hybrid and transnational tradition, constantly redefined over the course of a twentieth century, divided into three periods. First, in Rio de Janeiro, capoeira was nationalized by popular practitioners, educators and intellectuals (1905-1928). Secondly, this capoeira which became Brazilian, underpinned by an ideal of progress, was transformed into sport (1928-1953) in the Sudeste and the Nordeste. Here, in reaction, emerged a « traditional » capoeira, which became hegemonic from the 1950s, to the point of erasing from public space, sports capoeira. At the same time, the two merged, giving rise to contemporary capoeira. Third, from the 1980s, it metamorphosed into a postcolonial struggle in the service of the cultural and socio-political defense of Afro-descendants, the suffering population in contemporary Brazil.Ultimately, the successive reinventions of capoeira question its deep nature. This is why, we propose a definition, based on the study of its technique.
