Les écoulements de particules sont présents dans de nombreux phénomènes naturels et applications industrielles. Lorsque ceux-ci rencontrent un ou plusieurs obstacles, les particules peuvent se retrouver piégées et se déposer contribuant ainsi à colmater la conduite où s'écoule la suspension. C'est ainsi que dans l'industrie nucléaire, un des problèmes récurrents est le colmatage des générateurs de vapeur présents dans les centrales nucléaires.
