The Urbs and the Garden : epicureanisms and respublica from Amafinius to Julian

Le refus épicurien de la vie publique est presque un topos, tant chez les auteurs anciens que modernes. On étudie alors peu le rapport entre cette philosophie et le fait politique. Pourtant, nombreux sont les épicuriens romains qui ont participé directement au pouvoir : C. Cassius Longinus, L. Manlius Torquatus, L. Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, etc. Devant une telle contradiction, il faut essayer de comprendre, sans préjugés, les relations complexes entre la philosophie épicurienne et l’État romain.Ce mémoire de thèse se divise en quatre parties principales, qui suivent de près les évolutions de la res publica, de la crise de la fin de la République au tournant chrétien de l'Empire. Cette philosophie supposée en dehors de l'espace politique est en fait présente au cœur des débats politiques et philosophiques de l’État romain pendant plus de six siècles. Déterminer la place de cette philosophie dans la res publica permet ainsi de mieux définir et comprendre l'identité politique de Rome et ses mutations.The epicurean refusal of public life is almost a topos, both among ancient and modern authors. The relationship between this philosophy and politics is then little studied. However, many Roman epicureans participated directly in politics : C. Cassius Longinus, L. Manlius Torquatus, L. Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, etc. With such a contradiction, we must try to understand, without prejudice, the complex relations between Epicurean philosophy and the Roman state.This thesis is divided into four parts, which closely follow the evolution of the res publica, from the crisis of the end of the Republic to the Christian Empire. This supposed philosophy outside the political space is in fact present at the heart of the political and philosophical debates of the Roman state for more than six centuries. Determining the place of this philosophy in the res publica thus makes it possible to better define and understand the political identity of Rome and its changes
