The dialect of the Branès Nord-Taza (north-west of Morocco) : phonological-phonetic study of jebli (mountain) arabic dialect

Cette thèse se veut une contribution à la réflexion sur les particularités phonologiques et phonétiques des parlers arabes jbala du nord-ouest du Maroc. Des parlers qui renfermeraient, selon les linguistes, les traces de l’arabe introduit au Maghreb par les premières conquêtes arabo-musulmanes (VIIe -VIIIe siècles). Le parler de référence sur lequel se base cette recherche est celui de la tribu Branès, située au nord de la ville de Taza, au nord-ouest du Maroc.En 1917-18, l’arabisant français G. S. Colin recueillait les données linguistiques du parler arabe de la tribu Branès. Il le décrivait comme étant un parler d’une tribu berbère d’arabisation récente. Dans les années 1930, il l’intègre dans un groupe linguistique qu’il distingue au nord-ouest du Maroc et qu’il désigne par parlers jbala (ou montagnards) pré-hilaliens. Il répartit ce groupe en "parlers septentrionaux” et “parlers méridionaux”. Ces derniers, auxquels appartient le parler des Branès seraient plus influencés par le substrat berbère. Un siècle après, nous proposons de vérifier la valeur des propos de l’auteur sur une influence berbère plus importante sur les parlers méridionaux et une arabisation tardive de leurs locuteurs. Pour ce faire, nous présentons une étude du parler branès sur le plan phonético-phonologique, où l’accent est mis sur : 1) le relevé et l’analyse des traits distinctifs du parler, par rapport aux autres variétés de l’arabe marocain. 2) l’étude comparative intra-dialecte (parler branès-autres parlers jbala) et inter-langues (parler branès-parlers berbères du nord-ouest du Maroc.) en synchronie de deux traits principaux : la spirantisation et l’affrication.This thesis is intended as a contribution to the reflection on the phonetic and phonological peculiarities of the Jbala Arabic dialects in the North-West of Morocco. According to linguists, these dialects contain traces of the Arabic introduced into the Maghreb during the first Arab-Muslim conquests (7th-8th centuries A. D.). The dialect on which this research is based is that of the Branès tribe, located north of the city of Taza, in northern Morocco. The French Arabist G. S. Colin collected the earliest linguistic data on the Branès tribe in 1917-18. He described it as an Arabic dialect spoken by a recently Arabized Berber tribe. In the 1930s, he integrated this variety into a linguistic group that he distinguished in the North-West of Morocco and calling it “the pré-Hilali Jbala (or mountain) dialects”. He divides it into "northern dialects" and "southern dialects". The latter would be more influenced by the Berber substrate. A century later, we intend to verify the validity of the author’s remarks (still supported by dialectologists to this day) concerning a more significant Berber influence on the southern dialects and a later Arabization of their speakers. In order to do so, we present a study on the Branès dialect on the phonetic and phonological level, which a focus on : 1) the identification and analysis of the distinctive features of this dialect, compared to other varieties of colloquial Moroccan Arabic. 2) the synchronic comparative intra-dialectal (Branès dialect vs other Jbala dialects) and inter-linguistic study (Branès dialect vs Berber dialects of the northwestern Morocco) of two main features: spirantization and affrication
