Les patients atteints de mucoviscidose souffrent d’infections pulmonaires polymicrobiennes dont les principaux agents d’intérêt clinique sont Staphylococcus aureus et Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Ces deux bactéries co-infectent jusqu’à 40% des patients et sont capables, dans ces conditions, d’interagir de deux façons différentes. Les souches d’infection précoce de P. aeruginosa sont dans un état de compétition avec S. aureus, alors que les souches d’infection chronique sont capables de coexister. Ce dernier état reste peu décrit mais pourrait favoriser la persistance des deux pathogènes dans les poumons des patients.
