Peripherally derived steroids affect steroid production in the brain via the blood–brain barrier. However, steroid concentrations are lower in the cerebrospinal fluid than those in the blood, indicating restricted influx of steroids because of their metabolization by choroid plexus (CP) epithelial cells.
