This thesis analyses verbal humour in the sitcom The Nanny. It focuses on the use of Yiddish words and social stratification. The purpose of the thesis is to show that humour facilitates discussing topics such as ethnicity, class, and religion. Yiddish words in humorous situations were analysed to show how they bring closer two families of different religions and ethnicities. Furthermore, humorous situations between the upper class and working-class characters were analysed to show how humour brings them together.
