Genetic transformation of terpene biosynthesis and citrus taste modification

Plodovi agruma predstavljaju važan prehrambeni proizvod diljem svijeta. Raznolikost mirisa i okusa odlika su mješavine hlapljivih terpena koji oplemenjuju njihovu koru. Budući da je limonen najzastupljeniji terpen roda Citrus, koristeći tehnike genetičke manipulacije utjecalo se na ekspresiju gena koji kodira za limonen sintazu u obrnutoj (engl antisense) i usmjerenoj (engl. sense) orijentaciji integrirane sekvence u plazmidu. Ovaj rad daje pregled utjecaja transgenih linija koje sadrže snižene i povišene koncentracije limonena na ljudsko osjetilo mirisa i odgovor na biljne patogene.Citrus fruits represent an important food product worldwide. The variety of aromas and flavors are characterized by mixtures of volatile terpenes that refine their peel. Limonen being the most abundant terpene in the genus Citrus, genetic manipulation techniques were used to influence the expression of the gene encoding for limonen synthase when integrated either in sense or antisense orientation. This thesis provides and overview of the influence of transgenic lines of citrus fruits that either have reduced or elevated concentrations of limonen on the human sense of smell and the interaction of the plant with insect herbivores and pathogens
