Anhand des Vokalinventars der ersten Silbe teilen sich die ostseefinnischen Sprachen in zwei Gruppen, in die Südgruppe (Nord- und Südestnisch, Wotisch und Livisch) mit dem Hinterzungenvokal õ [ɤ] und in die Nordgruppe (Finnisch, Karelisch, Wepsisch und In-grisch) ohne diesen. Diese Zweiteilung wird in der Finnougristik schon weit über 100 Jahre kontrovers diskutiert. Die Frage jedoch, ob der Laut bereits in der ostseefinnischen Grund-sprache vorgelegen habe oder eine späte Herausbildung sei, wurde dabei bisher nicht beant-wortet.
