Exhausted tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are characterized by immune checkpoint (IC) expression, for instance PD-1. One of the major immunotherapy approaches, based on IC inhibition, has proved efficient in the control of tumor progression in many cancers. Despite this progress, only a proportion of patients experience clinical benefit. To improve responses to IC inhibitors, understanding mechanisms involved in TIL exhaustion and investigating which T cells are able to respond to immunotherapy are required.
