The rapid increase in demand for bandwidth from existing networks has caused a growth in the use of technologies based on WDM optical networks. Nevertheless, this decade researchers have recognized a “Capacity Crunch” on optical networks, i.e. transmission capacity limit on optical fiber is close to be reached in the near future. This situation claims to evolve the current WDM optical networks architectures. For example, optical networks are operated statically. This operation is inefficient in the usage of network resources.
