As the status of women worsens with the adoption of a "socialist market economy" in early twenty-first century China, some scholars speak of the emergence of a new wave of women's cinema in female directors’ films. This term, which has existed since the beginnings of feminist film criticism, refers here to films directed and written by women that question both the representations of women from the point of view of the male gaze and male narrative patterns.
