This study focuses on belt fittings from the early Middle Ages discovered in a burial context in the southern Upper Rhine region. On the basis of 40 sites, 1374 burials and 2370 objects, three axes are addressed : typochronology, the study of the position of the objects in the burials and the relationship of these objects to the sex and/or the gender of the deceased. Through these three axes, it has been possible to question the role of the belt in funerary practices, but also their symbolic, cultural and social aspects.The contribution of radiocarbon dating has made it possible to propose a typochronology that goes beyond the generally accepted limit of the first half of the 8th century.
