In the eighteenth century, the enlightened public opinion was moved by what they called the great “Massacre of the Innocents” perpetrated by untrained midwives. From the 1760s onwards and during the nineteenth century, the French State worked continuously to provide the country with an increasing number of trained and certified midwives.
