Early detection of retinal pathologies in humans requires non-invasive in vivo imaging of retinal tissue at the cellular level. Yet, observation of the retina from the outside suffers from the poor optical quality of the eye, the ocular movements, light scattering by tissues, and low signal-to-noise ratio due to eye safety constraints. Adaptive optics (AO), which compensates in real time for optical aberrations introduced by the eye, makes it possible to increase the spatial resolution of in vivo images. Nevertheless, the contrast of in vivo retinal images corrected by AO is degraded by a dominant diffuse background and their ultimate resolution remains limited by the numerical aperture set by the eye pupil.
