Crossflow 0.1 μm microfiltration of skimmed milk is an operation conventionally used in the dairy industry for protein fractionation. The optimization of MF is complex due to: i) the lack of knowledge on the physical phenomena involved and ii) the difficulty of the optimization problem which must consider contradictory objectives, heterogeneous variables and mathematical non-linear equations or functions. Using both knowledge integration and optimization is an interesting strategy for solving multiobjective optimization problems in a field where the available knowledge is incomplete.
