When wind blows at the surface of liquid of sufficiently high viscosity, a wave packet of small amplitude appears, rapidly becomes unstable and generates large-amplitude fluid bumps that propagate downstream. We call these non linear structures viscous solitons. They were first observed by Francis in experiments using oils (Francis, 1954), but not quantitatively characterized until now.
