The history of ‘vikings’ in Aquitaine encompasses, on and off, more than two centuries, from their first attested appearance and attacks on some ‘islands off Aquitaine’ in 799 until the early eleventh century. It is a subject that historians have only touched upon sporadically and generally in a very piecemeal fashion, and it has never hitherto been studied in any real depth. The objectives for this study were twofold. The first has been to attempt to fill the yawning historiographical gaps in terms of our understanding of the activities of the various Scandinavian groups operating in Aquitaine, from the Loire valley southwards, over the course of these two hundred years.
