The early stages of brain development are largely determined by genetic programs. After birth, neuronal connections become susceptible to remodeling in response to changes in the environment. This plasticity culminates during specific time windows termed critical periods. The underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. In my thesis, I studied the mechanisms underlying network plasticity during two critical periods in mice: the critical period of ocular dominance plasticity in the visual cortex and the critical period of synaptic pruning in the prefrontal cortex.
