In order to modulate physical or chemical properties at the molecular level by a mechanical motion, a family of switchable molecular tweezers has been developed. They are composed of a terpyridine ligand as a switchable unit activated by a coordination stimulus, and metal-salphen complexes as functional units. A new terpyridine has been developed to obtain by default a closed conformation. Its functionalization by Pt(II)-salphen complexes has provided new luminescent tweezers. The reversibility of the opening/closing motion has been demonstrated as well as the intercalation of flat aromatic guests within the cavity of the closed form.
