T cells are stimulated upon interaction with their cognate antigen. While much research has focused on the role of antigen presenting cells (APC) and cytokines as important components of the T cell microenvironment, recent data highlight the importance of the metabolic environment in sustaining the energetic and biosynthetic demands that are induced upon antigen stimulation. The subsequent metabolic reprogramming of the T cell is conditioned by the nutrient composition and oxygen levels.
