The magnetism of clay minerals - and more generally of lamellar silicates - comes from the iron atoms they often contain (because iron is an important part of the earth's crust). The existing choice, among the different types of phyllosilicates, of various distances between the planes occupied by the iron atoms (thus of various values of the exchange interaction according to the third dimension), or the possibility of varying this distance by the intercalation of a whole range of organic molecules, seems to make these minerals an interesting place for the study of two-dimensional magnetism. We present here a first step in this field. It is a study made on clay minerals, as well as on phyllosilicates in macroscopic crystals by Mössbauer spec...
