The Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) was proposed in 2006 to initially address Internet scalability issues. It is based on a map-and-encap mechanism to split the who and the where of the current IP addresses. To retrieve the association between them, a new network entity called the Mapping Distribution System (MDS) is introduced. Although LISP is currently under standardization in Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and is deployed in the wild by two testbeds at the same time, it is still young. It lacks the thorough measurement work to show its real performance in large-scale networks.
