In the Late Middle Ages a vast movement of rewriting older texts in vernacular languages took place, including hagiographical works previously written in Latin. Our focus will be placed on written works from the XIIIth and XVth century, specifically French adaptations of the Latin Vitae of Gallo-roman and Merovingian Saints who played an important role in the French royal domain’s past. We will try to identify the specific contexts of these adaptations, and their target audiences. The translation of certain spiritual works into a language other than Latin, and in particular "vulgar" languages, long considered as those of the people (as opposed to the Latin of the clergy), demonstrates an effort to share the Saints’ stories to the masses.
