Aux origines de la Provence: les populations gauloises entre hellénisation et romanisation (300 - 125 av. J.-C.). Contextes archéologiques et concepts historiques

During the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, in the southern Gaul, commercial, cultural as well as conflictual interactions, increased significantly between the Gallic, Greek and Roman populations. Within the framework of this thesis, these contacts, which have been studied for a long time through the prism of the concepts of Hellenization and Romanization, were the subject here of an in-depth analysis which allowed them to be deconstructed and thus brought to it an innovative look. This analysis has shown that such a conceptualisation is required, but it also leads to interpretative biases. To overcome these issues, this research focused on merchant exchanges as well as the ceramic repertory of the sites. The study – supported by four previously unpublished collections and supplemented by an extensive bibliographic review – is based on nearly seventy ceramic sets from southern protohistoric settlements. With this data, never collected before, it became possible to understand the question of trade flows, the nature of the sites or the traded products. Although wide geographic and chronological variations have been thus revealed, common trends have emerged. It was also an opportunity to return to Gallic societies in this rapidly changing economic and political context. Despite the mutations and the rise in armed conflicts highlighted by archaeology and textual sources, sociocultural transformations remain minor and are not necessarily conditioned by the increase of interactions. In spite of numerous Mediterranean borrowings, which are always reinterpreted, the Gallic communities stand out through the persistence of their eating, funerary and ritual practices, thus revealing the complexity of the cultural processes of the end of the Iron Age.Au cours des IIIe et IIe siècles, les interactions en Gaule méridionale, tant commerciales que culturelles et conflictuelles, s’accroissent considérablement entre les populations gauloises, grecques et romaines. Ces contacts, longtemps étudiés par le prisme des concepts d’hellénisation et de romanisation, ont fait l’objet, dans le cadre de cette thèse, d’une analyse approfondie permettant de les déconstruire et d’apporter un regard novateur sur la question. Cette analyse a montré qu’une telle conceptualisation est nécessaire, mais qu’elle conduit aussi à des biais interprétatifs. Pour dépasser ces problèmes, cette recherche s'est concentrée sur les échanges marchands ainsi que les faciès céramiques des sites. L'étude – portant sur quatre collections inédites et complétée par un vaste dépouillement bibliographique – se fonde sur près de soixante-dix corpus provenant d’habitats protohistoriques méridionaux. Avec ces données, jamais rassemblées auparavant, il est devenu possible d'appréhender la question des flux commerciaux, la nature des occupations ou des produits échangés. Les résultats obtenus révèlent de profondes variations géographiques et chronologiques, même si des tendances communes se dégagent. Ce fut aussi l'occasion de revenir sur les sociétés gauloises dans ce contexte économique et politique en plein bouleversement. En dépit des mutations et de la hausse des conflits armés mis en exergue par l’archéologie et les sources textuelles, les transformations socioculturelles restent mineures et ne sont pas nécessairement conditionnées par l’accroissement des interactions. Malgré de nombreux emprunts méditerranéens, qui sont toujours réinterprétés, les communautés gauloises se démarquent à travers la persistance de leurs pratiques alimentaires, funéraires et rituelles révélant ainsi la complexité des processus acculturatifs de la fin de l’âge du Fer
